"A Witness, Not A Spectator"

I love this sentiment. It's one of those things that I'd never be able to think up on my own, yet I recognize its veracity the instant I see it. (I also love the image chosen to accentuate it. I'm mildly less enthusiastic about Cinema Paradiso than many of my friends—the scenes without Philippe Noiret and Salvatore Cascio tend to drag, probably because the adult Totò never interested me very much—but the sequences in the theater are spectacular; a perfect example of what Mr. Todd's trying to accentuate here.)
